• Flow Control Valve – these are important to maintain a balanced flow throughout the system.  Maintenance and replacement are necessary over time.
• Water Distribution Piping – the piping design and components contribute to the overall proper operation of the cooling tower.  PVC piping, grommets, couplings, end caps, gaskets, and branch arm assemblies are all pieces that may need to be replaced over time.
• Nozzles - these are used to distribute water over the wet deck in counterflow cooling towers. There are often a number of nozzles set up on a spray branch for wide and uniform coverage.  The nozzle body, splash plate, orifice, or adaptor may need to be replaced before considering a full nozzle replacement.

Drift Eliminator Replacement

Drift eliminators are an essential part of an evaporative cooling tower.  Their performance ensures that the integrity of the atmosphere around the cooling tower is protected from potentially harmful chemicals and minerals carried in the water droplets within the cooling tower.  A drift eliminator catches those water droplets and contains them within the tower, preventing them from being released into the environment (See: Drift Eliminator Principle of Operation).

Because the performance of the drift eliminators are so important, it is necessary to replace brittle or clogged drift with fresh, new pieces as part of a regularly maintained schedule.  Drift eliminators may become damaged by algae, slime, moss, mud accumulation and scale in the wet and humid environment of the cooling tower.  The positioning and placement of drift eliminators must also be checked to ensure consistent and adequate airflow.  Drift eliminator replacement becomes necessary as the life expectancy of the part nears its end.

Drift Eliminator Principle of Operation

Drift Eliminators are designed to capture large water droplets caught in the cooling tower air stream. The eliminators prevent the water droplets and mist from escaping the cooling tower. Eliminators do this by causing the droplets to change direction and lose velocity at impact on the blade walls and fall back in to the tower. Efficient drift eliminators will keep drift losses to less than .001% of the recirculating water flow rate.

Lumber used in the construction of industrial cooling towers is subject to deterioration and must meet existing standards set by the Cooling Tower Institute (CTI) for water conditioning and pretreatment in order to extend the lumber’s useful service life.

Pressure pretreatment on Douglas-fir and Redwood lumber must be in accordance with CTI Standard WMS-112. Remedial preservative spray application may also be necessary to prolong the expected useful life of the structure, depending on a number of factors including the type and condition of the lumber, the condition of the environment where the cooling tower is constructed, the primary make-up source of the water for the cooling tower, and alternate drying and wetting cycles of operation, as in seasonal, intermittent or periodic operation.

There are specific recommendations for treating lumber in the wetted or flooded parts of a cooling tower, including monitoring water pH levels and control of microbial activity.
